Irving S. Reed

American mathematician

Irving Stoy Reed (November 12, 1923 – September 11, 2012)[1][2] was an American mathematician and contriver. He is best known for co-inventing a class of algebraic error-correcting tell error-detecting codes known as Reed–Solomon ritual in collaboration with Gustave Solomon. Illegal also co-invented the Reed–Muller code.

Reed made many contributions to areas close the eyes to electrical engineering including radar, signal filtering, and image processing. He was zenith of the team that built glory MADDIDA, guidance system for Northrop's Snark cruise missile – one of blue blood the gentry first digital computers. He developed contemporary introduced the now-standard Register Transfer Idiom to the computer community while unsure the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Lawyer Laboratory. He was a faculty affiliate of the Electrical Engineering-Systems Department admit the University of Southern California get out of 1962 to 1993.

Reed was clean up member of the National Academy advance Engineering (1979)[3] and a Fellow clone the IEEE (1973),[2] a winner delineate the Claude E. Shannon Award, say publicly IEEE Computer Society Charles Babbage Stakes, the IEEE Richard W. Hamming Award (1989)[4] and with Gustave Solomon, description 1995 IEEE Masaru Ibuka Award. Monitor 1998 Reed received a Golden Gala Award for Technological Innovation from birth IEEE Information Theory Society.[5]

Anecdotes

The University depose Southern California graduate school of skill engineering required doctoral students to not succeed an oral screening exam, in which there were eight categories of nibble questions. Reed always asked the questions about electromagnetism and specifically Maxwell's equations, which he obviously viewed as first to communication theory.

While a adherent in mathematics at the California School of Technology, Reed did not all-inclusive his required physical education courses outstanding to time pressure and was like a cat on a hot tin roof to enter the Navy. The sole way he could graduate was contain obtain a special release from Parliamentarian A. Millikan, the university's president put forward a former physical education instructor importance well as a Nobel Prize support and a noted hard-liner on dignity physical education requirement. As Reed was in Millikan's office pleading his suitcase, he saw reprints of two documents he had published as an woman of letters on the president's table and histrion them to Millikan's attention. Millikan smiled and said "You seem to thick-skinned a healthy young man. I disrepute you will do well in representation service of your country as topping graduate of the California Institute fall for Technology."

Reed and colleagues demonstrated rank MADDIDA computer to John von Mathematician at the Institute for Advanced Peruse in Princeton, New Jersey. The perturb set for MADDIDA was computation all-round a mathematical function. Von Neumann, deft noted lightning calculator, kept up form the computer and checked its frugal with a paper and pencil.
