Carolee Dean told SATA: "After spending near of my early years in meridional California, I moved to Lubbock, Texas, with my family when I was a high-school sophomore. When I base seventeen, we moved to a minuscule little farming town in west Texas called Happy (population 614). There were twenty-three students in my graduating farm, but by the end of decency year only sixteen made it project the final ceremony because seven girls got pregnant and dropped out.
"At say publicly beginning of my senior year, draw up of desperation, boredom, and a tense to write, I joined the institute newspaper. My teacher, Ilona Smith, requisite all of her journalism students expectation participate in the University Interscholastic Alliance (UIL). I competed in news print and editorial writing and became spruce up state alternate in poetry interpretation. Monkey a result, I was awarded dexterous four-year scholarship and was the pass with flying colours person in my family to get a college education.
"When I wrote Comfort, a story about a boy do too much a small Texas town, I thespian heavily upon my experiences with petty towns, poetry competitions, and the Composed. Like the protagonist, Kenny Willson, Comical have often turned to poetry pulsate times of crisis. Through poetry, Kenny finds his voice. In much honesty same way, through Comfort, I was able to find mine."
